Using the sun as a backlight

Check out one of our latest articles online at: http://digitalphotobuzz.com/

One thing that I just love to do with portraits is turn the couple around and shoot right into the sun using it as a backlight. Then there are a few different things you can do to get a very different feel to the shot. Sometimes if I want to keep that rich color of the background and have my subjects more defined i’ll set my exposure for the background and light the couple with a off camera light (or two or three). You can see a good example from this article (off camera lighting and sunset). But sometimes I want something a little more soft and romantic, I want the glow of the sun to just radiate in the image and don’t mind if my subjects are a little soft also. Then I won’t use any flash at all and let the sun really be a strong backlight that gets a little blown out. Here is an example from a recent wedding:

Engagement Photos - Legion of Honor San Francisco

Engagement Photos - Legion of Honor San Francisco

I shot an engagement session at the Palace of Fine Arts a few weeks ago and it was such a great session.  The couple really has a great personality and are a perfect match for each other, I can't wait for the wedding.  They also really were perfectly dressed for the location and that is always such a big deal.  If you are going to be taking engagement photos your attire should always go with the feel of the location and if you aren't sure what to wear just ask me for some suggestions!

Here are a few of my fav's from the session:

The Legion of Honor is such a romantic, classic place to photography I just love it!
Also if you have never been inside, check it out there is some really great art they have in
their collections.

Adam and Jill wedding photos

Adam and Jill

Adam and Jill were married last month in Capitola.  The wedding day was beautiful, the fog lifted just
as the outdoor ceremony started and it was a great wedding to be a part of.  Since the wedding was a day wedding we were able to go down to the beach to get some photos of them afterwards and they turned out awesome.  Here are some shots of the day:

Last weekend was another great weekend of weddings

Last weekend

Last weekend was another great weekend of weddings.  I was in Monterey on Saturday for Lyndsey and Jeremy's wedding, even though it was overcast all day the wedding still turned out great!  You guys are such a cute couple and I enjoyed being a part of the day.  We captured some cool shots of the bridal party on the rocks at Lovers Point so I will try and post a few next week.

Joey was in San Jose for Kelly and Chris wedding at Oholone College.  They met in the Theater dept. there so got married at the Theater and it sounded like such a unique cool wedding.  There are also some very cool shots of them in the theater that I will post later on.

I hope to get caught up with out postings later on today, so look out for some images from out last few weeks of weddings.

Engagement Sessions

For Randy

Since Randy was harassing me on my last post for my slacking on the blog lately, here is a recent shot that I just finished.  Valerie and Josh are a wonderful couple that I have been able to photograph a few times now.  It was a beautiful day in Santa Cruz and they even got wet at the end of the day :)
I'll post more when I can but for now here is one image

and here is one more that I like from the shoot:

Some more engagement photos

Some more engagement shots

Here are some of the Retro series we did for Marissa and Lawrence.  He really had the jump kick down and
really reminded me of someone from the first godfather series with that hat and suspenders, very cool.

We also did a club scene where they changed into formal wear and got some cool studio shots:
