When I first met with Sean and Reyna I was excited about their vision for the engagement shoot. It’s always so much fun to do a shoot that is a little different and has more of their personality into the shoot rather than just photographing some place because its beautiful. They had in their mind the classic 50’s shot of the sailer in times square kissing a girl and we planned on photographing around the Presedio for a cool vintage style shoot. We found some great spots and even a few that I have never noticed in the many times of shooting around that area and got some great shots of them. We even found a house that had a classic car parked in front of, just for us

I think digital composites can be so interesting and Photoshop really is such a powerful tool in the creative process. With the ability to layer images over images and blend items together Photoshop really gives us as artists endless possibilities. There is so much detail you can weave into a digital composite and as an art form you can let your imagination run wild.

shoeboxed.com receipt scanning review

Awhile back I reviewed a scanner that I have used for awhile in the office here for scanning receipts. Scanning all of our receipts has really save a lot of time come the end of the year tax time and also is very helpful when you need to find a old receipt for a warranty or other purposes. Every week we scan all of our business receipts into a program and categorize them. It gives a running total of amount spent in each category so I can always see how much we are spending on a certain category at a glance without having to open up quickbooks. This has been very useful to keep organized and helpful in situations where I need to find an old receipt. Awhile back I had to find a receipt for something I bought a few years ago for a warranty and by doing a quick search I was able to pull up the receipt scan and find all the information I needed. The only bummer about this system is it does take time to scan each receipt. If you keep up on it every week, I try but honestly sometimes a week turns into months and I have a stack of hundreds of receipts, it isn’t too bad but still take time. For most of you who are running a small photography business you probably only have 1 employee (you) so time is really your most important asset. In order to truly grow your photography business you have to be able to leverage your time and focus on what you do best… create art, while leaving some of the other tasks to other people. If you are going to pay a part time office person to just sit at a desk and scan receipts it can become pretty expensive.

I am so stoked to have my 3rd iPad app finished and waiting for apple to approve! I started writing a few mini books awhile back to help educate photographers wanting to start shooting weddings or portraits. There are so many questions I get from people that normally are the same questions people have when getting into photography. I also see so many people starting out that lack a certain creative element in their photography. Normally some of the more advanced things like Lighting are missed by most people starting out. So over the past year I have been working on putting down on paper some of the many things in my head that I can share from my 11 years of shooting professionally and years of Art school before that.

I wanted to create some guides that were really easy to learn, easy to understand and covered the technical parts of photography but in a not so technical way. As a photographer I am visual, after college I would still keep up with my photo education and read books, attended seminars and workshops and usually was pretty uninspired by the way the information was presented. Normally it was so technical that it lost my attention after a few minutes and I put the book on the shelf never to be picked up again. So I set out to create some tools for people to learn and be inspired and also wanted to create them at a very good price, really a no brainer. When the iPad was released I was excited, it really is a perfect medium to learn on . You have a nice large screen as well as something that feels great in your hand like a book but can be so interactive. So far I have created a Portrait 101 and a Wedding Photography 101 guide that right now are only $1.99! I wanted to create some very useful guides to help people get more creative with their photography and also have them be so inexpensive anyone can buy them. These also are available as iPhone (or iPod touch) version and for those of you who don't have an iPhone or iPad going to be available as eBooks coming out in the next few months.

Tips on keeping them sleeping

Nothing is more beautiful than a peaceful sleeping baby. But sometimes no matter how tired they are when you are ready to shoot them sleeping they just don't want to stay asleep. I don't know how many times a mom has fed, burped and changed a baby then rocked them to sleep and once I start clicking the shutter they start to wake right up. There are a few tips that I have found very useful to keep a baby sleeping.

1- Swaddle them up nice and tight. Especially for newborns up to 2 months old the swaddle can be your best friend.

2 - Pacifier. Although it might not look perfect in the image a pacifier can really help settle a baby down and get them to fall asleep. And I do think it's cute to have a few images of them with the pacifier in their mouth. Normally after a few minutes they will let go of it anyway and it will fall out of their mouth or you can try to gently pop it out.

3- Make sure the room is warm. Babies are used to being in the womb where its nice and soft and warm. Make sure the room is very warm, especially if you want a shot of the baby sleeping without clothes. Keep them surrounded by lots of soft warm blankets and snuggled up.

4- Have some background noise playing. You can bring a small CD player or use your iPhone and play a CD of soothing sounds. There are tons of soothing type CD's out there for babies and they can really help put the baby at ease.

Our wedding wednesday post this week is a quick recap of the amazing Una Bella Sera event last weekend. Sometimes I find it really interesting the journey life can take you on when you start to open yourself up to new opportunities. I know that change and new things can be hard to take on sometimes. We all get in our comfort zone and it’s hard to leave that place where we feel comfortable and take on something new. But when you open yourself up to new things you will be amazed how much you will grow.

As an artist I constantly get inspired to create new things. Sometimes it might just be creating a new type of image, doing something I have never done photographically. Sometimes it might be starting a new venture like this website was. My normal routine would be to get inspired start planning things out and then a little bit of doubt would come in and make me put the project on the side for awhile. After a few weeks it would be out of my mind and I would be on to the next thing.

Last year I finally came to the conclusion that failure really doesn’t matter. What other people think of me doesn’t matter and that fear and doubt shouldn’t make decisions for me. I told myself that if I got a vision to do something I would see it through completely. There have been a lot of things I have been doing this past year that all haven’t worked out the way I might have thought from the start but have been such an amazing experience so far. This website actually just began as an idea I had to give people that took my workshops a place to go and get some additional information. I thought I could add a tutorial a week and just give them something to keep growing after taking a workshop. After the first few weeks though other people found the site and I started getting more and more traffic from all over the web. I started posting more and more articles and more people kept coming. It turned into something so much larger than I would have ever imagined and I have some really good things to come later on for this site.

Using the sun as a backlight

One thing that I just love to do with portraits is turn the couple around and shoot right into the sun using it as a backlight. Then there are a few different things you can do to get a very different feel to the shot. Sometimes if I want to keep that rich color of the background and have my subjects more defined i’ll set my exposure for the background and light the couple with a off camera light (or two or three). You can see a good example from this article (off camera lighting and sunset). But sometimes I want something a little more soft and romantic, I want the glow of the sun to just radiate in the image and don’t mind if my subjects are a little soft also. Then I won’t use any flash at all and let the sun really be a strong backlight that gets a little blown out. Here is an example from a recent wedding:

We had such a fun wedding in San Jose a few weeks ago for Phil and Leslie. This was our 3rd wedding with this group of friends and such a awesome wedding from start to finish. They were married downtown and with the sun going down so early now we got to shoot the bride and groom and bridal party all during the evening. We went to a few different spots around downtown and got some cool, creative night shots of them. The reception was also downtown and was a great night. I knew it was going to be a great party and they didn’t disappoint, the reception had fresh cotton candy being made and a photo booth that was packed all night! It ended with a bridesmaid going through a glass wall so you know it was a good party (she wasn’t hurt so everything was all good). I was so happy to be a part of the day and felt like I was part of the family, thanks again guys for having me as a part of your special day.

artistic first dance photos

One part of the wedding day that I really love to photograph (actually I love it all, but for the sake of this blog post one part I really love) is the first dance and father/daughter, mother/son dance. Normally these are in the reception venue where the lights come down, creating a nice dark room. I love to think of dark places as a nice blank canvas ready to create whatever vision is in my mind.

Since I have a really diverse background in photography (photojournalism and fine art) I pull out lots of different tricks throughout the day to really capture the images in my mind that will show off the day in a artistic and unique way. We usually setup some lights around the dance floor to create some unique lighting for the dancing. This can give us so many different ways to shoot with every angle being a little bit different for lighting.

We have received a few requests for posts dealing with white balance and it seems like there is a lot of confusion around this topic. The white balance in your camera is its way of trying to figure out the color temperature of the light when you are shooting each image. Most cameras come with a few standard settings for your white balance; Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Florescent, Tungsten, Kelvin, Flash and Custom. Getting your white balance correct (and even knowing what should be correct) can be a very detailed and tricky task. There is lots of science behind it, but we will give you a simple yet full explanation of white balance and some ways to help get a good image in camera.

san jose lifestyle family portraits

What is different about our lifestyle family portrait sessions and why are they important? This is a great question that I ask myself all of the time. To be honest I didn’t do a lot of portraits in the past because I never really got it, I never really got how important they were to a family until last year. After having our first child and watching her grow up in front of my eyes already to a 14 month old who is walking and talking I realized how important capturing these little moments with her were. I love looking back at some of the photos of her as a little baby and going through all of the stages of her life so far. Each stage is so different and her personality changes all the time. The images I cherish the most are the natural and fun shots, a photo of me giving her a hug and a kiss brings back so many more memories compared to just a standard studio style photo for me.

After realizing how important it was to capture and create these moments I really started to let more people know of our family portrait sessions. I believe every family should have awesome memories of this time in their life and want to capture your families moments. One part of the wedding day that I really love to photograph (actually I love it all, but for the sake of this article one part I really love) is the first dance and father/daughter, mother/son dance. Normally these are in the reception venue where the lights come down, creating a nice dark room. I love to think of dark places as a nice blank canvas ready to create whatever vision is in my mind.

There are a couple of things I normally do at reception venues to create artistic light. With an average size room what I will usually do is put 2 lights on opposite corners of the dance floor. One will be an alien bee B800 which produces a lot of light. If you are looking for a nice and portable monolight, these alien bees are great. We have used 3 of them in the studio for about 6 years, they are reliable and priced very well. Check them out here: http://www.alienbees.com

shooting for the soul

shooting for the soul, some recent thoughts by Mark.

We exhibited some of our fine art work last evening at the La Dolce Via event at Club auto sport. I got to exhibit some of my own personal Fine art from an Italian series I did awhile back. I haven’t been doing a lot of my fine art work in the last few years since we have been so busy with weddings and custom portrait work. This event was awesome and it really felt great to get out there and show some of my personal work. A lot of my past personal art series I have printed up and stored away in boxes. I really love a lot of this work and this got me thinking a lot about why its been so long since I have done any personal projects. I have always loved to travel and really get inspired by telling stories and capturing the feel and the essence of a new place. I love to travel to a new locations and just soak up the culture, the food and the drinks while creating memories along the way. Travel has always had a special romance to me, even the craziness of a airport or train station has always been so interesting to me.

We met a lot of great people at the event last night who all loved my work, and it was so much fun to tell the stories behind each image. At the end of the night it made me realize that as an artist doing personal work can be so important. It can help you grow so much and that can feed right into your clients work. One thing I realized after viewing all of these images that have been in boxes for awhile was that some of my favorite images were taken with my good old Holga camera that I have had for about 15 years. I used to use it often at weddings but lately its been collecting dust. A lot of the work from this Italian series that I love are shot with the holga and printed either in a sepia tone or black and white with acrylic oils over them. It gives the work such a nostalgic, romantic feel to it and also matches the feel that I love to create for weddings. This evening made me bring the holga out of retirement and dust it off again for some new use. Im going to break out that T-Max film from the freezer and start popping some rolls off at weddings again and can’t wait!!! I’ll definitely be posting some images on the blog so look out for some new artistic stuff. And for all you photographers out there remember to take a little time and shoot for your soul, it will re-energize you and get you focused on your passion!

New photography tips website launched!!!

As most of you who know me or read my blog often know that I have a huge passion for photography and teaching. I love to share my passion of photography with everyone and can talk most peoples ear’s off when it comes to the art of photography. I love teaching the workshops that we offer but those are normally only a few times a year. During the rest of the year I always have some great tips and ideas that I sometimes share on this blog but have so much more to share. I have decided to create a brand new website that will be for photographers and photo enthusiasts. This new website will include shooting tips, lighting information, critiques and discussions, product reviews, workflow solutions and much much more. I am excited to be able to share all of the behind the scenes information hat goes into creating our artwork and share even more my passion for photography with the world. I hope for this to be a site where people can learn, be inspired and join in conversations about photography and art and look forward to forming a new community of photographers.

We shot such a great wedding day at Villa Montalvo awhile back, it was a fun day with a great couple and think I am going to have to break the blog down into 2 posts since there are so many photos I want to include. Normally I try to post under 10 images of a wedding to keep the blog short and sweet and so it loads quick. This wedding started off at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga and then we stopped over at Hakone Gardens on our way to the St. Claire hotel in San Jose. Along the way we captured some great shot of the bride and groom and their families. I think i’ll seperate the blog into morning at Villa Montalvo and the the evening at the St. Claire Hotel.

So, here is a little glimpse into the morning of this beautiful wedding at Villa Montalvo.

Half moon bay golf links wedding

Here is part 2 from our wedding at the Half Moon Bay Golf Links a few weeks back. David and Wynn were such a fun couple to work with and Wynn had the best smile all day long. Every time I had David do anything (even just looking over at her) she had a huge smile from ear to ear. It was a great day and I was so happy to be a part of it! The Half Moon Bay Golf Links is also such a beautiful location to get married at, its right next door to the Ritz Carleton Half moon bay and is really a ideal setting for a wedding. You have the awesome cliffs on the ocean, the Ritz (which always reminds me of being in Scotland with the look of the hotel along with the normal fog of Half Moon Bay), and the beach all within a quick golf cart ride. We got to spend a good amount of time with the bride and bridal party on the day which worked out great for photos.

Congrats Michael and Annmarie for a perfect wedding day from start to finish. You guys are such a sweet couple and I can tell you will have a lifetime of awesome times ahead. What a very spectacular day, even with the heat (it was over 100 degrees this day) you would have never know it, everyone had a great time and a huge smile on their face all day long. We got to shoot at some of our favorite places all in one day which was just amazing, the day started out at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga where Annmarie and the girls got ready in the bridal room. Annmarie had the most amazing veil, words can’t describe it you have to see the slideshow below. The ceremony was at the Villa at the Oval gardens. It was great to work with Kathleen and her crew who always put together a flawless event. After the ceremony we had some good time with Michael and Annmarie to walk around some of the grounds at the Villa for photos and family pictures.

The reception was at the St. Claire hotel in downtown San Jose (which is where Annmaries parents were also married) and Hilary out there did a great job making sure every detail was attended to and went according to plan.

We got to shoot at some great places but the people are who always make a great wedding. Both families were great to work with on the day and they really had the “A” team of event professionals working the day.

Sometimes everything just comes together perfect for an image. Here is a shot from Christina’s wedding at Clos La Chance winery. I love the backlighting that windows give sometimes and in this one frame a bird flew right by the window (no photoshop here all natural!). I fired a few shots off to capture the bird in the frame and one shot just came out perfect. More to come from this great wedding later….

The cutest baby!

We had such a wonderful wedding awhile back at the St. Claire hotel downtown San Jose and I never had time to post more than just a few images. Such a great bride and groom, they were so cute together and just great to work with. Every time I looked over at the bride during the day she was just glowing and always had such a awesome big smile on her face! awesome weekend full of weddings

This past weekend was our first back to back wedding weekend of the year and it was great! We had two awesome weddings and will share more about them soon. Congrats to Joe and Deb who were married at the Willow Heights Mansion on Saturday and Andres and Lisha who were married at the St. Claire Hotel on Sunday. Both weddings were great and I can’t wait to share some images soon! Here are a few more shots from Ignacio and Louisanas wedding. The had a beautiful ceremony at St. Joseph’s church downtown San Jose and then a reception at the Ranch Golf Club. The lighting at the end of the day was just amazing and we were able to create some awesome shots of the two of them and a few fun images of the bridal party. Here are a couple more from their day. We also finished the layout from their album recently and the album turned out so great, it really tells the story of the day well. I’ll try and post some layouts from the album soon! With the launch of our latest site it got me searching through my archives to see how much the site has changed over the years. From our last site to the current there isn’t a huge change, just larger new images and a few other cool features to come soon. I wanted to do something a little different this year for our Year in review show. Normally I will put together about 100 of my fav shots from maybe 5 or 10 weddings and put together a show. This year I really wanted to include all of our brides and grooms from 2008. Every wedding we shoot is important and we always capture shots that we love so I decided to include just 3 shots from every wedding. Going through over 100,000 images was pretty tough, and choosing only 3 per wedding was even harder, but I finally narrowed it down and created a quick show. Check it out and leave us a comment below.

2008 was another incredible year for us, we were able to document some awesome weddings with some really great people. Fasten your seatbelts, here is our 2008 review in 2 minutes 13 seconds!

The first event they had last year was amazing and they are set to make this years event bigger and better. Last year they put together some really awesome vignettes to showcase their design work and it was truly amazing, this year there will be even more designs to showcase the latest and greatest.

A great wedding coordinator friend of ours (Heidi from COUTURE CELEBRATIONS) posted a great little food for thought on her blog today. You can check it out here: http://couturecelebrations.blogspot.com/2009/03/thought-of-day.html. I totally agree with her and think its something for everyone to really think about. In todays hard economy I know everyone really wants to get the best deal out there but with your wedding do you really want to take a chance on some vendors like your photographer? In college I knew of a lot of people that would put up ad’s to shoot a wedding and would do them for very cheap, sometimes the photos came out OK and sometimes they really didn’t. Even someone who does photography part time for a few years isn’t going to have the expertise to give you the shots that you deserve on your wedding day like a true pro. A high quality professional can produce results far more than you would ever imagine and years down the road you will usually be pretty happy for selecting a professional. I love Heidis quote “But not getting what you expect is NOT a deal.”, this can be so true when it comes to photography. Sometimes instead of comparing packages from all different photographers I think its better to find out who’s work you like and then see if you can fit their work into your budget. Sometimes you might have to pick a more basic package and not get all of the albums you would like to right away, but those can always be created later, and what’s the point of having multiple albums if you aren’t happy with the photos in them? Just something to think about :)

Our vendor spotlight this week is Andrew of Studio MSV. We first worked with Andrew last year and were amazed by the same day edit he put together, it was a very artistic cut of the day and to have put it together so quick was pretty awesome. All of the guests at the wedding couldn’t believe the video! We have also been able to hang out with Andrew at other functions and he has a great personality and is a fun guy to hang out with, at a wedding its always a plus to have a fun videographer to capture your day. the reason I love what I do ….

Someone once said, “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” These words are true in the sense that working won’t feel like work if you’re happily doing your job each day. But one thing that I’ve found to be even more profound and can even better affect the way you feel about your work is the people you work with. Consider this: you find your dream job and are content to wake each morning to earn your living. But your co-workers are always gossiping about you or sabotaging your projects. How long do you think you will like your dream job? Conversely, if you love the people you work with, no job - no matter how nasty (have you ever seen “Dirty Jobs”?) - will ever get you down!

That’s why I love doing what I do. The people I work with and meet are top notch! The photographers I work with, the coordinators, and especially the brides and grooms, are all so inspiring, creative, and loyal, that it’s hard to have an “off day”!

your wedding specialty …

One of the things that I’m proud to say I helped pioneer in the Bay Area is the Same-Day Edit. The “SDE” - or as I call it, the Instant Video - is a short highlight movie that is shot, edited, and played back on the day of the wedding. It usually takes me two to three hours of editing time to create a beautiful short movie of the wedding day that can be shown during dinner or toward the end of the reception. In fact, we have the capability of turning the highlight movie into a wedding favor DVD that each guest can bring home with them! The Same-Day Edit is a real crowd-pleaser and something in which I was instrumental in bringing to popularity.

But beyond the Instant Video or products like our Covert Proposal Videos, fun Engagement Music Videos, and others, it’s my style that brides gravitate toward. Our videos are never boring or “typical” and always evoke emotions. It’s my unique style that sets us apart form the rest.

best wedding memory …

I see so many memorable things at so many different events that it’s hard to pick out just one!

But if you put a gun to my head - or invited me to participate in a vendor spotlight blog post - I might choose this one as my favorite wedding memory: I think it was the second wedding I ever shot. Ever. The bride’s caterer ran out of food and she went to her room really upset. The groom went after her in order to console her and I was stuck trying to decide whether I should follow and document it or let them alone.

I decided that, as the wedding videographer hired to document the event, it was pretty much my duty to keep record of what had happened so the events could be captured for posterity. I followed them to their room and started rolling tape. Teary-eyed and flustered, the bride described to me what had happened and how she felt. It was some of the most genuine footage I’ve ever documented. The couple subsequently sent me a thank you note that said they loved the video and that I was their favorite vendor. That, I was the “most professional and most pleasant to work with!”

It’s moments like those that make doing what I do such a pleasure!

favorite movie …

My favorite movie of all time is Ben Hur. No other movie comes close. Netflix it. (A close second is Die Hard and Fight Club.)

last movie rental you watched …

The last few Netflix movies I watched were all from my wife’s queue so I’m too embarrassed to name them.

where can you be found on days off …

I rarely have days off, but most recently, I went up to Lake Tahoe with my wife, two kids, and a bunch of my church friends. On other days when I’m taking a break from working, I relax by watching TV. Some of my favorite shows are (or “were” - alas, some of my favorites tend to be less popular and, to my chagrin, get cancelled before they’re due!): The Shield; Deadwood; American Idol; Damages; Flight of the Conchords; Dexter; and others.

what superhero would you be …

I used to collect comics in my youth and still find them beautiful to look at and stimulating to think about. So you might get a much longer answer than you anticipated if I go Full Geek on this answer. But the short of it is: I appreciate Batman’s emotional complexities and raison d’etre, but who wouldn’t want to be the seemingly immortal and nearly omnipotent Superman? My answer? Superman. (But I would skip the formalities of having an alter ego. I would just be Superman all the time… and I’d play sports instead of fight super villains.

if I am typically craving something it is ….

… dangerous to be in my way.

fav song at a wedding (and least fav) …

My least favorite is probably the electric slide. No offense, folks-who-used-the-eclectic-slide-at-their-reception.

The song that I’ve heard at a wedding that became my favorite is “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. I’m not a big country music fan, but the first time I heard that song being played during a father/daughter dance, I couldn’t help but to imagine 20 years or so into the future and to picture my daughter, Hannah (7) being given away to be with her husband-to-be. :-(..

Whether your desire is exchanging your vows under a beautiful wooden gazebo, an elegant affair in the “Barrel Room” or dancing under the stars at “Lavánda”, Léal Vineyards and a great glass of wine can make all your dreams come true. Leal is a great venue that has a bunch of different options available for weddings. They have a nice barrel room for that romantic indoor wedding or a few different outdoor spots one with a lakeview and vines surrounding you. You can event rent the 2 houses on the property and make your wedding last the entire weekend! There are so many great spots around there for wedding photos, you can shoot in the vineyards the wine cave and waterfall or go up to the houses and shoot around the property. Villa Montalvo Wedding

Here is another new wedding slideshow from a event out at Villa Montalvo (now Montalvo Arts Center). One of our favorite places to photograph in the South Bay we have shot many weddings out at Villa Montalvo. There are two different areas you can have your ceremony there at the Oval Garden or the Love Temple. This wedding was at the Oval Garden with the reception in the front of the Villa. One thing I love about shooting weddings here are that the grounds are enormous and you have so many cool things to shoot, the inside of the Villa has some great photo ops the outside there are some great architectural spots to shoot around and then you have the vast grounds that you could spend hours walking around photographing a bride and groom.

Casa Real wedding photography

We had such an awesome wedding at Casa Real last year we have to show a few more shots of the wedding. This was such a fun bride and groom to work with and also a great bridal party. They all just had a blast all day and were open to do whatever to get some good shots. Also one tip for future brides, if you really want some good photos of you and your fiance along with your bridal party make sure to plan enough time in your day for photography. Also if you don’t mind seeing each other before the wedding it can be a perfect time to capture some great images of the two of you. I know some people think its a tradition to not see each other or that the groom will not be amazed and surprised when he sees you walking down the aisle but it can really work to your advantage to take photos before. Not only is there not as much stress and craziness going on because you aren’t surrounded by people but it can be a great opportunity to capture some images of the two of you alone and those times really can create some beautiful images. A lot of weddings when the groom first sees you walking down the aisle he is standing in front of hundreds of people and normally is pretty nervous. That takes a lot of emotion out of his expressions during this part of the day. If the first time he sees you is alone without the hundreds of people staring at him it can be a really beautiful and genuine moments between the two of you that is captured on film. No matter what you decide we will capture great shots of you but just something to think about for your day!

I am excited to announce we are building a brand new website to showcase our wedding work and it will be unveiled soon! This will be our 4th major update to our website in our 10 years of business and wow has it come a long way. Right before the release we will be showing off some screen shots of our first blogs so check back to see some shots from the past. We are going to release the new site in a few stages with lots of goodies along the way. There is going to be some video added to the blog and lots of big images, I can’t wait to have it finished up and share it with everyone!

Here are a couple images from Simon and Shan’s wedding at Testarossa. They had such a beautiful intimate wedding in the wine cave, a perfect setting for a wedding. It was the first wedding I have photographed out at testarossa where the dinner was also in the wine cave and it really gave a nice feel to the dinner. Everyone was seated at one large table so really were able to converse with the rest of the guests in a nice family style atmosphere. Congrats again guys!

We love designing wedding albums. The creation of an album for us is a very artistic process where we take into consideration the style of the day and create a custom design for every wedding that really tells the story of the day. It is such a fun and creative process and in the end every bride gets an amazing book to bring back all of the memories of her wedding day. Couture Celebrations offers Full Service Planning to Day of Direction and covers a large area from San Francisco to Carmel. My Assistant Lia has been with me for four years. I have 19 years of Hospitality experience which makes gives me a unique insiders understanding to creating events. I believe my down to earth personality puts not only my clients but fellow vendors at ease. Weddings are my obsession, and I was born to do this!

the reason I love what I do ….

I love a fast pace. I am a multi tasker to the tenth degree and I found a career that appreciates that. Not to mention that I am obsessed with great parties. I love having a new family every week to support and watching the bliss on our clients faces as they enjoy the party we worked so hard to plan. And I love seeing a vision realized. That’s pretty fantastic. I am a natural director so it was this or showbiz!

best wedding memory …

Wow, that’s hard. My wedding was the best one I can remember but that’s a given! I will say that my favorite moment is just before we send a Bride down the aisle. The nerves, the tears, the glow. I always tease the Dad (or who ever is walking them down) to give the Bride some last minute advice, and then I remind the Bride to breath and take in the moment because the rest of the day is going to fly by!

favorite movie …

Breakfast at Tiffianys. I made my husband watch it with me before I married him.

last movie rental you watched …

The Dutchess. Made me thankful and made me cry.

where can you be found on days off …

What day off? Playing with my kids, checking out the farmers market and watching movies with my husband.

what superhero would you be …

I always wanted to be Supergirl when I was young (probably because she had blond hair like me). It would be cool to be able to fly and use all those abilities to get the long list I have daily done!

if I am typically craving something it is ….

Chocolate, Coffee, Cheese and Wine. The basics.

The ranch golf club wedding

Here are a few images from one of our December weddings. The ceremony was at the beautiful St. Joseph’s Cathedral downtown San Jose and then we headed up to the Ranch Golf Club for the reception. There are so many cool little corners to shoot up at the ranch and we captured some amazing light right when we got up there. Here are a few of my favorite shots:

Since I am always the one with the camera it is very rare to have photos of me. But with our first baby I really wanted to capture some photos of the 3 of us all together and had a photographer friend of mine capture some shots of the 3 of us. Baby Faith was in a pretty bad mood that day but we still got some great images of us together and even the ones where she is having a little fit are so cute. Memories of her at this little age are just priceless and it really made me appreciate how important family photos can be. Here are just a few of my favorites from the shoot:

When I started planning my wedding, I knew a good photographer was going to be most important. Photos are the only thing you will have as a memory of your wedding! I love it when we get some new albums delivered to the studio, it always feels like Christmas opening up the packages. Some of the last few albums we have done I really have been proud of the final product, the designs came out awesome and I want to keep them all for studio demos. Here are a couple albums we just got in, they have an amazing metal cover and just look perfect. For any of our past brides that never ordered an album now is the perfect time, with the off season right now we can do your design fast (in about a week) and get a really unique custom album to you quick. If you need to have an album created let me know.

Every once in awhile I love playing around with the Apple photobooth on my MacBook Pro. Some of the circus style effects just crack me up and I love making myself look like a alien Today in between client meetings I grabbed a few photos of myself and baby faith in the photobooth, here are just a few of my fav’s. beautiful wedding at the Ranch Golf Club

Congrats Ignacio and Louisana who were married last December at St. Josephs church in downtown San Jose. St. Josephs is such a beautiful church I love to photograph in there, the detail inside is just amazing. After the ceremony we headed up to the Ranch Golf Club for the reception. We started off with some fun shots of the bridal party and even thought it was getting very cold out that evening, everyone in the bridal party was great, they had fun and you can’t even tell they were freezing in the photos! The reception turned out fantastic , they had a great band that kept the dance floor packed all night. It was a great group to work with and we created some amazing moments of the day. Also a thanks to Amy Paris from Paris Designs for all of her coordination work, the day was so smooth!

help me pick a movie

With our new baby my wife and I haven’t been able to get out of the house much and haven’t seen a movie in the theater for awhile. Now that she is finally a little bigger and we can leave her with the grandparents for a couple hours we are trying to figure out what to watch next and for the first time in awhile there are actually a bunch of movies that look pretty good. I am usually a big film critic but there are 4 movies out there that look worth watching and since we might not get out too much its hard to decide which one to see. Here are my top 4 I want to see (in no order), put your comments down below if you have seen any and your recommendations.

- Notorious

- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Santa Cruz wedding

Congrats to Ryan and Sonja our last wedding of 2008. It was a beautiful day in Santa Cruz, I couldn’t believe it was the end of December! What amazing weather, a nice sunny day in Santa Cruz which was perfect for an outdoor ceremony at the lighthouse on West Cliff Dr. Sonja cruised up in a nice yellow VW bus that dropped her off to walk down the aisle. After the ceremony we got some killer sunset shots of the bride and groom along west cliff and finished off the night at the Red Room downtown.
